Rough Cut 3
After getting feedback on our rough cuts 1 and 2, we created a 3rd and final rough cut to gain any minor feedback on before completing and producing our final music video.
Feedback
- Strong narrative
- Remove clip of man singing "to sleep"
- Adjust clip of man and woman on sofa
- Change clip of mans hands on piano- not realistic
- Lip syncing works well

Rough Cut 2
Using the feedback from our rough cut 1, we improved and developed our music video before showing it again to the teacher to gain more feedback in order to make our video as best as possible.
Feedback
- I like the repeated pans from left to right
- The piano bit don't convince me- doesn't look like he's playing in time to the song
- You can see the fire exit in the background in one of the performance shots
- He finishes playing the piano before the music stops
- Different photo at the end would be nice
- Add clip of old man singing
Rough Cut 1
Below is the first rough cut for our music video, as it was a first draft, there were still some improvements to be made so we received feedback for us to work on in order to create a rough cut 2.

Equipment Used in our Music Video- Erin
The equipment used in our music video, consisted of a Canon HD camera, a tripod and an iPhone 6.
Most of our music video was filmed on the Canon HD camera. We used this camera as it produced a clear and professional image that will help to make our music video look as high standard as real music videos. We also used this camera as it was easily portable and therefore we could set up and film in different locations quickly and with ease.
At least half of our shots involved the use of a tripod in order to steady our shot and make them look as professional as possible. The tripod was also used to get the right height for some of our shots without having to freehand and allow our arms to ache. The panning shots within our music video were created using the tripod as it allowed us to fix the camera into place and then use the handle smoothly pan from right to left and left to right.

We used an IPhone 6 to film a small section of our music video that was part of the feedback we received for our rough cut 2. We used this piece of equipment as it was more accessible at the time than the camera as it was only to film a 10 second clip. Similar to the camera we used , the iPhone camera created a clear and precise image for our music video, although quality between the two did vary.
To edit our music video, we used IMovie. This software allowed us to crop, cut and edit clips together to ensure that our music video told a story and looked professional. In order to gain experience of this editing program, before we started on our music video, we used IMovie to practice lip synching a video that used music from a phone to match the music on the Mac.

Actor - chosen actor to play the artist and Female role in the Music Video
Alex Wilson
Name: Alex Wilson
Age: 23
Lives: Chelmsford, Essex
Why we chose our actor
The reason we chose Alex to play our actor in our music video is because he suits our genre of Indie pop. This is because he wears simple clothes such as denim jackets and shorts etc. He also has a bit of a beard and is not someone who just focuses on his image like many mainstream pop artists do. He also has quite long hair like Tom Odell does which is good because we are doing a Tom Odell song.
Another main reason we chose Alex to be our main actor who plays the artist in the music video is because previously Alex has been in a music video. This is because he used to be in a band called 'Hello Monroe'. This band was signed by an independent record label too and therefore Alex knows about indie music. The fact that he has been in a few music videos before is good as it means he is used to taking direction and following instructions by people before.
As Alex had to lip sync and play his drums in sync in his music video it means that he will be able to do this easily within our music video that we create and will not be shy and then not look like he is singing. Although Tom Odell is 24 and Max is only 23, Alex's image suits the voice of Tom Odell also, this is important as it will make our music video believable and look like Alex is actually singing this song. As he has a girlfriend this is helpful too because it means that we will have someone to play the girl in the narrative of the music video and that the two of them will be comfortable acting in front of each other. These are the reasons we picked Alex Wilson to be our main actor.
Laura Thomas
Artists Girlfriend - The artists girlfriend is going to be played by Laura Thomas. She fits the part of the girlfriend because in real life she is going out with Alex and therefore they do not have to act in love as it is real love so the acting ill not be that difficult for them. This is also good because they are comfortable to act and for Alex to lip sync lyrics to Laura. Laura is 21 years old which will also be good for the part in this film as she is slightly younger than Alex which is stereotypically the way most couples are (man slightly older than the woman). As Laura does have a full time job in a bank it is good as she will have business clothes that she can use for the opening shots where she comes home from work.

Lighting Notes
For our music video it is important that we pre-plan the lighting that we will use in our music video. This is to make sure that the lighting quality in the shots is good and so that the audience can see what we want them to see within each shot, for example when Alex lip syncs the words to Laura when she is asleep on the sofa, there will need to be some lighting on his face so that it is clear what he is singing in the shots as if all the lights were off and trying to give a night time feel then it would be difficult for the camera to pick up the movement as well. Therefore we will need to plan what lighting we would like in each shot ready for when we film.
Lighting in the hallway
At the beginning of the music video the actress Laura will walk through the font door into the hallway. The hallway will be lit up quite well with the downstairs hallway light. The reason for this is so that when she opens the front door, the fact that it will be pitch black outside will show up well and it will make it clear to the audience that it is late in the evening and that the reason the hallway light is on is because it would be dark otherwise. This will make it obvious for the reason that they are just about to have dinner (because it is late).
Lighting in the dining room shots
During the dining room shots when the couple are eating a romantic dinner the light in the kitchen will be on and as this is a kitchen diner the lights will not be on in the diner section. There will be loads of candles on the kitchen table. The reason for all these candles on the table is because it will create a romantic setting for the couple and make the love story more believable to the audience. The reason that the light in the kitchen will need to be on as well is to help the candles light the room up a little bit so that the camera can see the actors facial expressions and how happy they are together.
Lighting in the lounge for the shots where Laura is asleep on the Sofa
When Laura is asleep in the lounge the light on the left hand side of the room will be on and the light on the right hand side of the room will be turned off. This is so that it is still obvious to the audience that it is night time and that is why she has fallen asleep in front of the TV but so that when Alex (the actor) lip synchs the words to Laura whilst she is asleep it is clear what the words are that he is singing to her, to make the lip synching look more realistic. The camera then moves over to the photo frame, this lighting also helps to see this photo more clearly. This is the reason that some of the lighting will be on and some will be off in this room. As it will be dark outside it will all be unnatural lighting. At the beginning of this shot the TV will be on as well which adds light to the shot.
Lighting in the Lounge of Tom Odell and Laura when they are older
The lighting in the lounge when the couple are older will be all unnatural lighting. There will be a main light in the lounge and there will also be a lamp on. This is to make the room light up quite a lot as it is set in the evening as now they are grandparents they are having the grand children round for dinner. The unnatural lighting will show the audience that, again is set in the evening.
Lighting in the performance shots
There will be a lot of high key lighting in the performance shots all by unnatural lighting. This is because when we film these shots it will be very dark outside but as the room that these shots will be filmed is in a concert hall of the Salvation Army, there are multiple lights that can be put on to make Alex stand out in the camera. This is important to show that Alex is the star in the music video and he will be highlighted whilst performing. It will also show his lip synching more clearly which is important to make it more realistic and look like he is performing live during the shots.
Lighting in the dressing room and hallway during shots just before the couple go out for dinner
As the shots will be filmed during the day here, there will not need to be much unnatural lighting used within these shots, therefore the only light that will be needed will be to emphasise that fact that Laura is putting makeup on, the other lighting within these shots will be natural lighting coming through the windows. This will be nice to have in the music video as there is already a lot of unnatural lighting used and as this is an indie pop music video it will be nice to have some more natural lighting which will suit the generic conventions more.
Lighting during the park shots
For the park shots, our footage will be shot early in the morning, this is so that it will be quite light outside. This natural lighting will be good as the location is also natural and is a generic convention of an indie pop music video. The fact that it will be light is good to see the lip synching that Alex will do and will make the movement of his lips stand out more and look like he is actually singing it there. The lighting here will make the audience think that it is lunch time and that the couple have gone to the park for a picnic during the day. The lighting will also be good to make the colours of the clothing stand out more. This is because Laura will be wearing a pink hat and scarf and also the leaves in the park will show up more in the shot which will show the audience that it is autumn.

Ideas for Magazine Advert- Erin
My idea for our magazine advert involves using the pictures that we see in the flash forward section of our music video and placing them together in a large wooden frame acting as a border round the edge of the advert. I have also added an image of the artist playing the piano as well as a park image from the music video in order to show the other elements/ settings in the music video. Unlike the music video, these images will be in colour in order to ensure it stands out to audiences. The font on my magazine advert is simple and white in colour to be sure that it stands out on the different backgrounds its placed against. I think my design would work well with our music video as incorporated images fro the video to help show the narrative and. Also it link to the title as I shows a couple a different as and therefore we are seeing them grow old together throughout the magazine advert. Ideas for Magazine -Sophie
Why I chose the image used on the magazine advert
For my magazine advert idea I decided to have the same photo as I used for the front cover of the digipak. This is because once people have seen this magazine advert it will be easy to identify in shops what the digipak itself looks like because there is the same recognisable image. I decided to put a photo of the artist and their girlfriend having a picnic at the park on it. They are looking at each other laughing whilst sitting down on their picnic blanket. The reason I decided to have this photo as the magazine advert is because I want the magazine advert and the digipak front cover to follow the narrative of the music video and not just be about the single itself. This helps promote the artist and their music video and therefore promotes the single. As Tom Odell is Indie Pop, the location of this photo for the magazine advert being in the park supports the low budget settings that Indie music often has for their music videos, digipak photos and magazine advert photo locations as the marketing of the artist will be on a low budget. Therefore to make all three of these promotional items relate so that people keep the single in their mind they can think of this photo as it would be used in all three.
Typography
On the top right hand side of the magazine advert it has the artists name 'Tom Odell' on it. At the bottom of the magazine advert the single title 'Grow Old With Me' is written on. The typography will be in a simple font where the words 'Tom Odell' will be in capital letters to make it look bold and stand out to the target market, this is also written in the same way on my idea for a digipak so when the target audience see the single released in shops they will automatically see the artists name. The name of the single will be in the same font but only the first letter of each word will be in capitals. This is because it looks better.
Just above the name of the single 'Grow Old with Me' there will be the information regarding when the digipak/ single will be released and in what way you will be able to buy it including CD, Digital and on iTunes. The reason I put a release date on the magazine advert is because people who are big fans of Tom Odell may want to buy this single straight away when it is released or even pre order it. The reason I have put the ways in which you can buy this song on (through iTunes or on CD etc) is so that if general people or people of the target audience see this magazine advert and think that they would like to buy the song but are not sure in what way it is being sold, they can thing think about whether they would like the CD or whether they would like the music downloaded onto their phone, computer etc.
At the bottom right hand corner of this magazine advert I have put Tom Odell's official webpage. This is to promote Tom Odell as an artist and not just this song specifically. If people who do not know much about him as an artist or if fans just want to learn more about him they can go on this webpage and look at perhaps other songs he is working on, look at previous songs and tour dates etc. This is good because it may encourage people to buy the tickets for his concerts and therefore he will have more ticket sales and people watching him live. Therefore I think it is important that this is written on the page as then it promotes more than just his upcoming single.
Colours used on the magazine advert
The colours of the magazine advert will be reasonably bright as it is supposed to be a picnic during the day and be a positive setting to support the positive lyrics in the song about him loving his girlfriend and wanting to grow old with her. The artist will be wearing dark colours though as this re-enforces that the genre is Indie Pop as many artists including Tom Odell wear a lot of black/grey/brown. The girl in the photo will be wearing jeans and will have probably have a coat on over her top depending on the weather when the image is taken.
Now that I have
designed my initial idea for my magazine advert for the single 'Grow Old with
Me' I will need to look at the other member of my groups magazine advert idea
and together we will design the final magazine advert taking different aspects
from each initial magazine advert.

Record logo- Erin
Above is the logo I have designed for our Iris Records/ Production company. When creating a music video, magazine advert and Digipak, a record label is needed to produce and promote them and this record label needs a logo. The background of my logo contains a number of purple shades as these are the colours that are all colours that come under the term Iris. I made the text black in order to make it stand out against the different colour shades; I then added a golden/yellow outline to contrast with the purple shades and make the name pop out to audiences. I chose to add an image of a microphone in order to link the logo with the fact that its for a record company. I edited the colour of the image to fit with the font outline and to make it stand out from the background.

Erin Parkhurst
Iris Records
For our magazine adverts, I designed a logo for Iris Records, our independent record label who is distributing our digipak (Iris productions will produce our music video). The
reason the text colour is in purple is because Iris is a shade of purple and it stands out quite a lot to the audience who will see it. The font is in bold and italic text and is in capital letters. This is to also make the logo stand out to the audience and make the independent record label more recognisable and popular to the target audience. Next to the work Iris there is a small picture of an Iris flower. This flower is on its own on the logo and not surrounded by other flowers which connotes that it is an independent company and alone without funding of other companies. The reason I put an Iris flower on this post is because it supports the name Iris Records.

Ideas for Digipak- Erin
The front cover of my Digipak design is simple yet effective with a black background white text and a young couples holding hands. The use of the black background allows the audience to focus on the image and the text which have a strong link that continues through the rest of the Digipak. I chose to use white writing on the black background in order to make it stand out to audiences as the colours are contrasting. It also help to emphasize the image of the young hands holding each other, which I used at the start of my Digipak as a starting point from which we will see them grow old throughout the Digipak before ending with them still holding hands but as an old couple.
The last page in my Digipak it almost identical to the front page as there is still a black background, white font and pair of hands but this time the hands are aged. Similarly to the first page, I used the black and white for background and font in order to make the Digipak stand out as well to highlight the image which will show that the hands, although the same as the ones on the front of the Digipak, have grown old together, linking to the title of our song. Both the front and the back page of my Digipak are similar in design to create the effect that as you open up the Digipak you're traveling through their life before ending the story the same way you stared after time having past.
The centre image in my Digipak is an image of our couple at the park, I used this image to have a visual link to our music video and to show that couple having fun and being very much in love. The colours used in this image will be very bright to connote the happiness within the video and narrative. I chose this image as the centre picture as it a neutral background and it shows the couples true love for each other in a natural situation which connotes a relaxed happy feeling for the audience.

Ideas for Digipaks - Sophie
My Digipak original ideas
For the front cover of my digipak I decided to put a photo of the artist and their girlfriend having a picnic at the park on it. They are looking at each other laughing whilst sitting down on their picnic blanket. The reason I decided to have this photo as the front cover is because I want the digipak to follow the narrative of the music video and not just be about the single itself. This helps promote the artist and their music video and therefore promotes the single. Also, as Tom Odell is Indie Pop, the location of this front cover being in the park supports the low budget settings that Indie music often has for their music videos and digipak photo locations as the marketing of the artist will be on a low budget. On the front cover the top right hand side has the artists name 'Tom Odell' on it. At the bottom of the front cover the single title 'Grow Old With Me' is written on. The typography will be in a simple font where the words 'Tom Odell' will be in capital letters to make it look bold and stand out to the target market, so when they see the single released in shops they will automatically see the artists name. The artist will be wearing dark colours though as this re-enforces that the genre is Indie Pop as many artists including Tom Odell wear a lot of black/grey/brown.
On the inside of the digipak, there are three photos. Each
page from left to right inside the digipak looks like a photo frame with a
different photo in them. It looks like a timeline of photos. The photo on the
far left is a photo of the couple (artist and girlfriend) when they are at
their current age (how old they are at the beginning of the music video), and
are just going out. The middle photo is a photo of them when they are slightly
older (possibly in their early thirties), and are married with a child and she
is pregnant again. This is to show what their life will be like in the future
when they start to 'grow old together' and then the third photo on the right
side, inside the digipak is a photo of them when they are a lot older and they
are still happy all those years later. The photo in the middle has a circle
around it as the CD will be placed on this part of the digipak. This idea of
them getting older together and being shown through photo frames is also shown
in the music video. This promotes the music video and artist again.
When you first open the front of the digipak the first image
you will see on the inside before opening that up to show the three photo frame
images on the inside will be a performance photo. This will be of the artist
playing on the piano and singing the lyrics to the song. It will be low key
lighting in the room to make sure it looks of the Indie Pop genre.
The artist will also be wearing dark clothing and playing on a black piano to
follow the generic conventions within this genre. It will also be nice to have
this photo on the digipak as then it does not just have photos about the
narrative of the music video for this song but also shows what the artist is
like as a performer.
On the back of this digipak that I have designed, in order
to follow the front cover of having a theme at the park. The back page will be
a photo of the grass/ field. At the top of this page will be the name of the
single 'Grow Old With Me' in a simple font and next to this there will be a
brown leaf. This is to show that the leaf is old and that they will become
old together, but supports the outdoor park theme. Underneath this the lyrics
will be placed on top of the grass background. This is because there wont be a
list of other songs as this digipak is for a single and not an album and it is
nice for the target market/ buyer of this digipak to be able to look at the
lyrics they will be hearing on the CD. At the very bottom of the back of the
digipak there will be two birds who are on the grass, this supports the park
theme but also that two animals want to be together and like each others
company as do human as this song is about two people who want to be together
and grow old together.
