Costume Information

For our music video we need to consider the costumes that the actors will be wearing in each shot and make sure they suit what is going on in the shot and the location in which the shot is taken. For example for the park shots it is important that the actors are wrapped up warm because the filming will be done in the autumn so it is cold and it would not make sense within the music video if the actors were to wear shorts and a top because it is set in autumn. The main two actors in our music video are Laura and Alex who act the roles of Tom Odell and his girlfriend and therefore we will need to consider their clothing and make sure it suits the genre.


Artist Tom Odell played by Alex Wilson

At the beginning of the music video the scene is set at home in the evening and the artist cooks dinner at home for his girlfriend. As this is a romantic dinner at home and the couple are not going out for dinner, Alex Wilson can wear a dark jumper and jeans as this is the kind of casual clothing that people wear in the comfort of their own home. The reason that the jumper is dark is to suit the indie pop genre.


In the next part of the music video the character/ artist gets home from work to find his girlfriend asleep on the sofa, as he has just got back from work he is in his work suit. This suggests to the audience that has a reasonably good job as he is wearing a nice suit and he didn't get home till a little later in the evening, this could mean that he commutes and works in the city and that is why he doesn't get home till late. The reason that this suit is dark is to add to the night time feeling of these shots as its supposed to be evening and dark and also because a generic convention of indie pop is dark colours.





The actor David who plays Tom Odell when he is old will be wearing a dark coloured jumper for older people. This jumper is reasonably casual because the character is with his grandchildren and just spending time with them therefore there is no reason for him to be dressed up. Also, the jumper will be dark to suit the genre of indie pop and because in there rest of the music video he wears dark clothing so it makes it more obvious that it is the same character when he is older because he wears the same kind of clothes.

When he plays at the piano during the performance shots the actor Alex will be wearing suit bottoms and a long sleeved shirt with sleeves rolled up. The sleeves rolled up is a generic convention for indie pop music and is often in the performance shots of these music videos. This is because it shows that they are laid back and are performing their music and a comfortable environment. This is also so that when he is playing the piano that his clothing does not get in the way of his hands.

During the shots when he goes out for dinner with his girlfriend, he wears a suit but to suit the genre indie pop and it being more laid back he is not wearing a tie. This is because it is rare to find an indie artist who is dressed very smart. This suit will again be dark to suits the genre of indie pop because the black is a generic convention of indie pop clothing. The shirt that he will be wearing with this suit is dark purple. This is so that it still fits in to the dark theme but also adds a bit of colour to the music video as he often wears black throughout the music video.







In the shots at the park the artist will be wearing a puffer jacket to show that it is cold outside but a nice autumn day otherwise they wouldn't be at the park. He will also be wearing jeans to show it is a casual picnic at the park with his girlfriend. The fact that he will not be completely wrapped up in had, scarf and gloves shows that it is only autumn and not winter and the fact that his jacket will be dark suits the generic conventions of indie pop music videos as well as it will make the colourful leaves stand out against it because of the contrast.




Girlfriend - Laura Thomas

In the opening and end shots of the music video Laura has just got back from work so will be wearing work clothes. This shows that she is a business woman and has a stressful job and that's why a romantic dinner was very nice for her to come home and relax to. The work clothes that she will be wearing will be dark to support the fact that it is an indie pop music video.

In shots where Laura is found asleep on the sofa she is wearing warm pyjamas to show the time of year that it is when this music video is set which also helps later on when there are park scenes outside in the autumn. They also make her look snug and cosy when fallen asleep at the TV. The fact she has fallen asleep supports her being a hard working business woman.

When Laura is an older lady sitting with her grandkids the actress Carole is in a black top and trousers to support the generic conventions of dark clothing in an indie pop music video. This is very causal because she is with her grandchildren and is very different to what she wears earlier on in the music video (work clothes) to show the audience that she is now retired.

During the shots when Laura is getting ready to go out for a nice evening meal with Alex she is wearing a black long dress. This is to support the dark clothing worn in indie pop music videos but also suggests maybe they are going out for a black tie event and that is why they are both done up. Black is seen as flattering and attractive so when Alex looks up at Laura and smiles it shows that he didn't mind waiting for her to get ready after all because she looks gorgeous in his eyes.

During the shots at the park Laura is wearing a parka coat and wellington boots to show that it is cold out/ autumn. This will be dark to suit the indie pop theme, however to show her feminine side she will be wearing a colourful hat and scarf to keep her warm and emphasise they are out at a park.






It is important that we plan our costumes before the day of filming to give our actors enough time to get these clothes for our music video and so that they will be prepared for filming on the day.
