One of my favourite music videos is 'The One That Got Away' by Katy Perry. The reason I like this music video is because the narrative is very strong and I think the way this music video has been put together is very clever and actually makes me as an audience member emotional watching it even though the music video is only 4 minutes and 50 seconds long. No other music video that I have seen brings makes me emotional this quickly so I think it takes a strong narrative to be able to do this.
During this music video Katy Perry is dressed up and has very good makeup used on her to make her look like an old woman, I think this is very clever because it is believable and when there are shots of her as young as well, it is clear that it is the same person acting an old and young part. This is clever and nice to see as many music videos or films that have young and old shots of someone have two different people playing the young and old character. From the very start of the music video it is quite obvious that the man who Is her husband is not the man that she was in love with when she was younger and it makes me as a teenager think about how the decisions I make now will effect my life in the future as she is acting 18 in this music video when she is young and that is another reason why this music video is effective because you think about your own life when listening to the song and watching the love story. I have always enjoyed watching love storied, especially in films therefore I like the fact that this music video can show such a clear narrative of a love story in such a short space of time.
I find that the music video is really effective when young Katy Perry sits opposite the old Katy Perry and they look at each other because the old woman looks at what her life was like when she was younger and the young Katy Perry looks at herself when she is older and what will come of her life. This makes me as an audience member feel emotion because It makes you think about what your life will be like in the future and when you're older you will look back at life and think about what you would have done differently which is what is happening in this music video but they are literally looking at each other and not metaphorically looking back/ forwards into their life.
The final thing that I like about this music video is that when Katy Perry is an old woman she goes to the place where her past boyfriend died and he is there and puts his hand on hers. This connotes that he is looking down on her, even though he is gone, I think that this is a nice part to the music video because she feels close to him again when she is there however the video then plays with the emotions of the audience when the music 'The One That Got Away' ends and 'You Are My Sunshine' plays whilst they are together but then turns off and he has disappeared and she realises she is alone and that man that was her 'sunshine' has died. This makes me as a viewer very emotional because you see that she has spent most of her life with a man who she does not love and still feels sad about the death of her boyfriend from many years ago.
Overall I think this music video is one of my favourites because it has a message that you shouldn't take love for granted or waste your life and the viewer can connect with the storyline and feel the emotions of the character. I also think that the special effects are clever and that it is nice that although the music stops at the end, to make you think about the narrative more another song is played and then there is still more of a storyline in the music video when the music ends. This shows that as well as promoting the album and the song, that it is showing a very strong narrative about love.
